Christmas is whatever you make it: while some might like to indulge in mountains of festive food, sip mulled wine and watch copious amounts of TV, others prefer to pack their bags and fly to pastures new for a few days. Whichever camp you fall into - traditionalist or sun-seeker - there's a destination for everyone this Christmas. Here are a few ideas to get you inspired.
Canary Islands, Spain
If a holiday is on the cards but a long-haul flight isn't, Spain is the ultimate Christmas getaway. The Canary Islands are the warmest place in Europe over the festive period, with temperatures reaching up to a balmy 24°C. Lanzarote, with its beautiful beaches, stunning scenery and buzzing nightlife, offers something for everyone: Costa Teguise is perfect for windsurfing fans, while Playa Blanca bustles with cocktail bars, fashion boutiques and chic seafood restaurants.
With a flight time of less than five hours, Spain really is within easy reach - and also boasts a number of delicious festive staples worth sampling, including turrón: moreish slabs of almond nougat that make excellent gifts for sweet-toothed loved ones.
Dubai, United Arab Emirates
For those willing to venture further afield, Dubai offers an unforgettable Christmas experience that couldn't be further removed from the traditional UK occasion. Spectacularly glamorous, this business hub is packed with high-end shopping outlets where visitors can pick up gifts, and plenty of sophisticated nightlife to ring in the New Year in style.
Although Islam is of course the dominant religion in this region, there are still opportunities for visitors to celebrate Christmas, bathed in 21°C sunshine. There are a number of festive dhow (traditional wooden sail boat) cruises that run along the Dubai creek on Christmas Eve and the day itself, combining turkey roasts with an Arabic buffet - all set to a soundtrack of well-loved Christmas songs.
Barbados, Caribbean
The Caribbean is a classic Christmas destination: after all, who can resist the lure of 29°C temperatures and gorgeous palm-fringed beaches? Barbados is a particularly good choice for a Christmas break, as late December marks the start of the dry season, and fine weather is almost guaranteed. To get the whole family into the spirit, time your visit to coincide with the mid-December Christmas parade, which traverses the streets of Bridgetown, with numerous floats decked out in lights, accompanied by carol singers and festive characters like Santa Claus and Frosty the Snowman.
An added bonus of jetting off on holiday for Christmas this year is earning air miles, which can be put towards the cost of that next getaway flight. American Express give cardholders the opportunity to earn Avios points when they spend on their British Airways credit cards, which come with great added benefits like accident and inconvenience cover - giving you piece of mind when you travel.
