Whether it’s a holiday for a special occasion, an all-out honeymoon or an exuberant treat for no reason other than you had savings to splash, the Indian Ocean is home to a host of islands that would be perfect for your lavish escape.
With 200 miles of coastline, if you’re after a glistening sandy beach to sink your toes into, look no further than Mauritius. This island paradise is the perfect bolthole for a luxurious retreat and while you could spend your days exploring the shoreline, that’s not all that this picturesque island has to offer.

If you want a holiday with a bit more of a wild side, head for Madagascar – the island home to many species of wildlife that are seldom seen anywhere else in the world, other than in captivity, including the ring tailed lemur, the fossa and many types of birdlife and natural flora. Make sure you take the time to visit the awe-inspiring Avenue of the Baobabs, located on the west of the island. While these towering baobab trees used to be part of dense forest, they are now the only remaining evidence of such woodland, which has since been cleared to make way for agriculture as the island’s population grew.
Of course, you don’t even have to head for the islands if you don’t want to – mainland India has a plethora of holiday options for the avid explorer, including Goa, where you’ll feel like you’re marooned on an island in the middle of nowhere, with the added abundance of colour and culture to discover. Take your pick from the myriad of exotic holidays that are at your disposal and prepare yourself for a once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Indian Ocean – you won’t regret it.
