On the 14th day of our 1 month Interrail trip through Europe we made a short stop in Gothenburg. As far as I can tell, Gothenburg, in spite of being the second largest city in Sweden, it's not a very touristy place. Even the locals told us there was not much to see here.
We stopped in Gothenburg only for one afternoon and a night, on our way from Copenhagen to Oslo. It was rainy and we didn't get to see much of the city either, but we definitely got to taste probably it's most outstanding pastry - the cinnamon bun! As a local lady told us, these are the biggest cinnamon buns in the whole Sweden, and they might as well just be, as it took the two of us to eat one. I'm not exaggerating when I'm saying these cinnamon buns are over 30cm in diameter and super extra mega delicious. We've had different buns in our life but never a cinnamon one, so where Gothenburg didn't really deliver in sightseeing terms, it did in culinary experience.

They sell these gigantic cinnamon buns at Cafe Husaren, in Haga neighborhood.
Haga probably the most important neighborhood in Gothenburg and the most charming one too. It has these lovely wooden houses with a peculiar architecture. Initially they were wooden houses from top to bottom, but then it was very easy to catch fire, which they often did. In the 18th century the neighbors decided to rebuild the houses, and make them less burnable this time, so they build only the upper floors out of wood, and the ground floor out of bricks, so if the neighborhood would catch fire only half the house would burn. Not much of an improvement if you ask me, but seems it worked, as some of the cute 3 stores high houses are still here.
We found the cobbled streets of Haga very charming, though by the time we got to walk them most of the shops and cafes were already closed. It's really a pity that they close almost everything at 5pm or even earlier here in Scandinavia. I can only imagine how lovely it is to stroll on the streets of the old neighborhood during a sunny morning...
Apart from Haga, we also spotted some quirky statues and fountains and walked the stylish streets of the city center. No, Gothenburg is not the destination of choice for many, but definitely has a charm of it's own that the patient traveler can discover over time. Unfortunately, we only got a glimpse of it.
