Anthony Smith, 84, Wants To Cross The Atlantic On A Raft

At 84, Anthony Smith Wants To Cross The Atlantic On A Raft
Anthony Smith
Anthony Smith, an 84 years old British adventurer who walks with a stick, is preparing to cross the Atlantic on a raft made of plastic gas pipes. He recruited a crew of 3 other men, the youngest of them being 56, and they plan to begin their adventure in January 2011. They will leave from Canary Islands and arrive to Bahamas 2 months and 2,800 miles later.

Anthony Smith has been dreaming about this journey for no less than 60 years. He is the author of over 30 books, a former science correspondent for The Daily Telegraph, an accomplished filmmaker and the first Briton to go over the Alps by hot air balloon. Five years ago he advertised in the Telegraph a straight to the point line: "Fancy rafting across the Atlantic? Famous traveller requires 3 crew. Must be OAP. Serious adventurers only". Two years ago Smith had a car accident and now he has to walk with a stick but this won't stop him from fulfilling his almost life long dream.

The raft is being built out of 13-yard sections of pipe that will have both ends sealed, trapping the air inside and making the craft buoyant. Two small shelters, built from pig huts, will protect the crew from nature's changes of humour and a small fence will line the outside of the boat to prevent them from falling overboard.

While most of the people Smith's age don't look for adventure travels anymore, Anthony Smith, is about to embark on the adventure of a lifetime. I always believed that dreams make the world go round and as a friend of mine once said, when we stop dreaming, we are long gone.
