At 15, Jordan Romero Is Ready To Conquer The Seven Summits
|
Jordan Romero |
UPDATE: On Christmas Eve, Jordan, along with his father and his stepmother, reached the top of Mt. Vinson in Antarctica, the last of the mountains on his list, and in the process became the youngest person to achieve this feat.
Only a year ago, Crina Popescu successfully conquered Mt. Vinson, the highest peak in Antarctica, and completed the Seven Volcanoes. Now it's Jordan Romero's time to do so. Crina was 16 back then. Jordan is only 15 now. And I still believe there's something wrong with the teenagers nowadays.
At the ago of 13, Jordan Romero became the youngest person to climb Mt. Everest. His passion for climbing started back in 2005 when he was barely 9. He saw a mural of the Seven Summits in his elementary school and that was what had him started on the dream of climbing the highest mountains on each continent. He's done pretty well up till now and all that stays between him and the title of the youngest person to ever conquer the Seven Summits is Mt. Vinson.
Next week Jordan Romero, together with his father and step-mother will leave U.S. for Antarctica. If everything goes according to plan, they will start climbing the 16,050-foot Mt. Vinson the next day. The Seven Summits was completed only by 275 people up till now.
Though Antarctica is the place with the harshest climate on Earth, this it is the best time to do the climbing. The sun is shining 24/7 during the Antarctic summer with an intensity that melts snow on dark objects. Nevertheless, the team will face brutally cold temperatures (the average temperatures during this period are usually −30°C), winds and the threat of avalanches.
Though Jordan Romero succeeded to climb Mt. Everest at a very young age, he might keep his record for a while. Just after his accomplishment, the climbers community started to wonder how young is too young and Nepal and China set strict age limits, requiring Everest climbers to be at least 18 before they embark in a such dangerous adventure. This is sad news for Crina Popescu, as Mt. Everest is the only one she still has pending to complete the Seven Summits and become the youngest woman to ever do so. Crina is 17 by now, so we will hear about hear soon. Crina and Jordan met during a previous expedition in North America and became friends.

Rainy Day
Well we did get some rain, and at 4pm the streets are wet again. I'm going to meet Jeannie & Donald at the gym in about 2 hours, and I'll be driving both ways in the dark. I hate that. It's also chilly, about 61 degrees,...

The 'hoek' Is On Fire
I had been to Noordhoek beach once upon a time. In the heat of the day, with friends we jumped in the sand and pretended that we might chance getting our toes numbed in the frozen ocean. But never before had I turned the corner and seen such...
