Bangkok: How to Spend 48 Hours in the City of Angels
With only 48 hours to spend in Bangkok, it can be hard to decide what you want to do and see to get the most out of your stay. Bangkok is a city bursting with activity where the old and the new co-exist in a unique harmony. Whether you decide to take some tours or to venture out on your own, you'll have no problem deciding how to fill your time. Stay at any hotel in Bangkok that is near any of the following attractions suggested below to make your visit fun and memorable. Here are some great suggestions for making your visit fun and memorable.
Chinatown Market
Located in the Yaowarat district, Chinatown is a great place to meander and take in the sights and sounds of a diverse community as they sell their wares. Though some might argue Klong Toey Market is the most interesting in Bangkok, the street market in Chinatown is as colorful as it gets. Here you can get great food and indulge your senses in the rich atmosphere. You can pick up souvenirs, beautiful fabrics, and lots of gold. While you're there visit the Wat Traimit temple where you'll marvel at the world's largest seated golden Buddha statue which stands almost 5 meters (just over 16 feet) tall. Chinatown is a place void of the modern skyscrapers of downtown, with an old-world feel, where you can find interesting hotels, like Shanghai Mansion, a unique boutique hotel inspired from the bygone atmosphere of the 1930s Shanghai.
Mahboonkrong
You can fill a lot of time at this massive mall where just about anything you want to buy is at your disposal. You'll be especially impressed at the selection of phone and photo equipment you can buy. You can also buy handbags, clothes, accessories, and a mountain of other products that will keep you shopping for hours. The mall can be busy and unbelievably crowded, but somehow that's part of its charm.
Patravadi Theatre
This open-air theater is a great place to see beautiful Thai and modern dance. You can unwind and relax from the busy world beyond and soak in the music and costumes that highlight what you love about Bangkok. You can stroll through the gallery there too and sit down to a quiet meal at the theater's restaurant. If you're in Thailand in January or February, be sure to catch the Bangkok International Fringe Festival held here annually.
"Venice of the East" Boat Cruise
This is a wonderful and relaxing way to see many parts of Bangkok where you'll move along the west bank of Thonburi and on to the Nonthaburi plantations. You'll float past rice fields and colorful floating markets. Along the canals you'll glimpse several temples too. Take a full-day or half-day tour to see another side of Bangkok that you won't see among the high-rises of the big city. It's the perfect photo opportunity for capturing the heart and soul of the Thai people.
Arima Onsen
After you've been running around the city all day, your body probably could use a little TLC. At Arima Onsen, treat yourself to an akasuri body massage and relax in the steam room or bath. You can get your hair and nails done so that by the time you leave you'll walk out a new person. Arima Onsen also offers reflexology, many forms of Thai massage, communal showers, and VIP rooms for those who want the best treatment available.
Blue Elephant Thai Cooking School
If you love to cook, bring home some new Thai cooking skills by attending classes at the Blue Elephant. The classes are offered twice daily. Morning classes include a trip to the market to choose the freshest ingredients for your dishes. The afternoon classes delve more into ingredients for your dishes and offer suggestions for substitute ingredients if they can't be found back home.
You can easily fill your time in Bangkok with these great activities. Enjoy the sights and sounds of this amazing city and don't waste a minute.
Other activities you might enjoy while in Thailand include attending a Thai festival and visiting the many and outstanding temples, out of which Wat Rong Khun really stands out of the crowd.
