European festivals can be buried in tradition or quite young (Sziget Festival was first held in 1993). However they are lots of fun and a great way to find out more about the locals and their history. For August, I made a list of 5 European festivals, each unique in their own way. So if you feel like dancing in the street, have a tomatoes fight, enjoy some experimental art, go back to the Dark Ages or simply have fun and feel young, Europe awaits you with wide open arms (and pockets).

Notting Hill Carnival
Where: On the streets of West London, London, UK
When: each August Bank Holiday weekend (29 - 30 August 2010)
Originated in 1964 as a way for Afro-Caribbean communities to celebrate their own cultures and traditions, Notting Hill Carnival is the biggest festival of its kind in Europe. Twenty miles of vibrant colorful costumes, hundreds of Caribbean food stalls, and an amazing array of sounds born from social solidarity.

La Tomatina
Where:  Buñol, a small town only 40 kms from Valencia, Spain
When:  on the last Wednesday of August each year (25 August 2010)
La Tomatina is a week-long festival featuring music, parades, dancing, fireworks, a paella cooking contest and eventually a big fat messy tomatoes fight on the plastic-wrapped streets of the city. It is tradition for women to wear all white and men to wear no shirts. About 90,000 pounds of over-riped tomatoes are used as friendly munitions.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival
Where: Edinburgh, Scotland
When: every August for three weeks (6 - 30 August 2010)
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival, attracting theatre, comedy, dance and music events. There is no selection committee to approve the entries, so any type of event is possible. The Fringe often showcases experimental works which might not be admitted to a more formal festival.

Medeltidsveckan
Where: Gotland, Sweden
When: 32nd week every year (8 - 15 August 2010)
One whole week (Sunday to Sunday actually) to go back in time and have a cocktail of laughter, educational activities and festivities. The Medieval Week on Gotland, Sweden’s largest island, is a good excuse to dress in period costumes, listen to 14th century music, perform traditional dances, watch  theater performances, pageants and tournaments.

Sziget Festival
Where: on Óbudai-sziget ("Old-Buda Island"), Budapest, Hungary
When: every August (11-16 August 2010)
The Sziget Festival is one of the largest music and cultural festivals in Europe, featuring rock, pop, reggae and electro music. Sziget Festival is a meeting point for the young generation. You can camp and party together with people from all over the world, get to learn more about other countries and make new friends. Sziget Festival is about letting yourself go and do whatever you feel like doing.
