Croatia's Zagorje Region: The Next Travel Frontier
Croatia’s stunning stretches of coastline; wealth of picturesque islands and historical towns and cities has already made it a firm fixture on the tourist map.
Whether you are heading to Croatia to stroll along Dubrovnik’s cobbled streets or to take a dip in Korcula’s crystal clear waters, you are bound to be captivated by Croatia’s charms.
However, now the country has become as member of the EU; seasoned travellers may be wondering if they will be able to find a corner of the country that hasn’t been conquered by the tourist masses.
I for one am planning get my European travel insurance sorted and get off Croatia’s beaten track in the near future to explore Croatia’s lesser know Istria region, home to the coastal town of Pula – famed for being the site of the annual Outlook music festival.
Travel experts have also been raging about Croatia’s Zagorje region, just north of the capital Zagreb. Those who are looking to truly get away from it all will love the region’s quiet laid-back pace of life, rolling countryside and its tasty local cuisine.
The Zagorje region has been described as a taste of the ‘real Croatia’, and with a rich cultural history and impressive architecture travellers will soon see why.
Head to the village of Trakoscan to take in the splendour of the 15th century Trakoscan castle, which has an impressive permanent exhibition tracking family life from the 15th to 19th century. The castle also has a landscaped park complete with lakes and meadows, and all this for an entrance price of £3.50.
For your next stop on the tour of the Zagorje region why not try the quaint city of Varazdin and get busy doing nothing by walking along the streets and taking in the city’s stunning baroque churches and architecture.
Foodies can also head to one of the first agritourisms in Zagorje region, Grešna gorica (Hill of Sins), located just across from the famed Veliki tabor castle (near the village Desinić).
Here visitors can enjoy a tasty home cooked meal using local sourced ingredients, with menu items including brawn (head cheese), thick mushroom soup and beef salad.
So what’s stopping you? Pack up your bags and make a beeline for Croatia.
