Fake Art On Display At National Gallery, London

Bravery lays in admitting ones mistakes. And that's exactly what National Gallery from London, mainly shaped by private donations, is doing this summer with the exhibition "Close Examination: Fakes, Mistakes and Discoveries", the first major exhibition of its kind. I guess 186 years is more than enough time to make mistakes and redeem them.

"Close Examination: Fakes, Mistakes and Discoveries" puts under the same roof the expertise of scientists, conservators and art historians, modern scientific methods, including infrared imaging, X-ray images and electron microscopy and more than 40 paintings. The exhibition shows to the public how some of the art world's mysteries have been unraveled, exposing an outright fake, showing how a modern forgery has been made to appear several hundred years old and presents examples where works of great masters have been re-discovered (ej. Raphael's "Madonna of the Pinks" and Botticelli's "Saint Francis of Assisi with Angels").

Another scientific method used was dendrochronology. That's how it was established, for example, that a portrait of Edzard the Great, was not, as thought, from the 16th century because the last growth ring found on its oak panel was from 1696.

The exhibition also shows how paintings were altered for a variety of reasons. During the restoration of "Woman at a Window", a 16th century painting by an unknown Italian artist, the original blond woman with a seductive gaze and enhanced bust was discovered under the modest brunette with a reserved expression. One suggestion for these changes is that the painting was altered to confirm to the Victorian era tastes.

Entry to The National Gallery is free. The exhibit runs until September 12, 2010.
