Home to the largest empire the world has even seen, Rome is a city with a formidable heritage and rich cultural legacy from ancient times. Today, it grows as a fashion centre, a pilgrimage hub with the Catholic magnet Vatican City, and a cosmopolitan tourist destination receiving millions of travellers every year from around the globe.
It’s true that when planning your trip to Europe all roads lead to Rome, but not with the same price tag. We strongly recommend planning your trip to Rome in advance so you can get fun and value for money at the same time.
Below we list some tips for taking the most of Rome on a budget:
Free things to do in Rome
Trevi Fountain: This iconic fountain is one of the most popular in the world, and certainly one of the symbols of Rome. Romantic, inspiring, simply beautiful, this landmark attracts thousands every day who gather to throw coins into the ponds, take some memorable pics and grab some drinks.
The Pantheon: This impressive structure was built in honour to the seven planetary divinities and features a stunning interior marble.
Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna): This centrally located square is a lively gathering spot in the city, certainly a very nice place to spend a day out and get to admire its colourful flowers decorations contrasting the 18th-century buildings.
Piazza del Popolo: Stylish Italian urban work by undertaken by Valadier at the beginning of the 19th century - definitely another great spot for chilling outdoors.
Best eats in Rome
Bruschetta: My favourite starter in Roman restaurants. It’s a very simple dish, but Romans manage somehow to make it taste so special..mmm. It’s a toast with tomato sauce and some spices, I guess there is the secret recipe.
Pecorino: A flavour-intensive cheese, hard and salty made from sheep’s milk - unbeatable.
Porchetta. This pork piece carved from a stuffed, herbed young pig, taste delicious!
Gnocchi alla romana: Truly Italian pasta usually homemade with fine flour made of semolina and served with traditional sauce for a perfect meal.
Pasta e ceci. This dish based on pasta with chickpeas is certainly a healthy option for a light lunch or dinner.
Pizza. Must-have meal in Rome or any other place in Italy, Roman pizza is thin and crisp, baked in wood oven and with intensive flavour.
Flights, accommodation and getting around
As a major tourist hub, Rome is very well connected via air with the rest of Europe. If you check out flight comparison sites like Momondo you will find lots of deals in different season featuring cheap flights to Rome. In regards to accommodation, we suggest to avoid Rome city centre as it’s much more expensive and with limited space. Instead, there are lodges and apartments few minutes away that can work out perfectly for your trip.
We recommend getting around by foot in Rome. Everything it’s pretty close, but most importantly, there are lot of small cafes, bars, squares and monuments worth visiting that you will miss otherwise. You can always get the bus or subway to move long distances if required.
Enjoy your trip to Rome!
