Las Fallas In Short
|
Falla being installed in front of the Town Hall, Valencia 2010 |
Festivals are a great way to discover how the locals have fun and the traditions that form the core of a community. Las Fallas is very much such a festival, full of symbolism and with as many layers as a fallera dress. Las Fallas takes place in Valencia from the 1st to the 19th of March and it’s about strengthening the community and having fun.
As a tourist, I visited all the fallas (huge papier mache dolls), took photos of beautiful falleras dressed in many thousands of euros dresses, stared in amazement in front of the flower statue of Virgin Mary, enjoyed the street light displays and the local cuisine and my heart jumped at the sound of each firecracker that composed the symphony of the daily mascleta.
I almost got the feeling that I’ve grasped the meaning of the festival, but then I saw the large tents installed next to every falla and the people dancing, laughing, and cooking paella in the middle of the street. It smelled so good that I could bet that it was the best paella ever. I will probably never taste such paella because the tents belong to the people that make Las Fallas possible, the community that year after year invests its resources in this festival. These are private parties that take place behind a fence, and I respect them. They deserve to eat the best paella in the world before seeing their work and money burned down to ashes, as at the end of the festival all fallas are set on fire.
