One of the best things about travelling is sampling local dishes and trying out different ways of eating. African cuisine features fresh local ingredients. In fact, fruit and vegetables play an essential role in the diets of African people. Naturally, the types of dishes vary from country to country and traditional.

Swahili cuisine is created from local ingredients. Local cuisine is basically an interpretation of Arabic and Hindu cooking styles, while in the Cape Verde Islands, fish tends to be featured in many of the local dishes. Here is a selection of traditional African dishes that should not be missed.



Bunny Chow

This popular South African dish originated in the 19th century and was the lunch of choice for field workers. Half a loaf of bread with the center hollowed out and filled with lamb or beef curry. The curry is usually very spicy and features potatoes and vegetables along with the meat. The bread makes the perfect bowl that is also edible, making the whole dish ideal for eating on the go. Bunny chows are still commonly eaten for lunch and are widely sold at street stalls and markets throughout South Africa.

Ful medames

This hearty dish hails from Egypt and features fava beans, slow-cooked in a copper pot and mashed with olive oil and garlic. It is commonly eaten with flatbread, such as pita. One of the great things about this dish is that it is suitable for vegetarians and is very filling. It is believed by many food writers that this dish has been around since the time of the Ancient Egyptians and is a popular breakfast dish that is very affordable, even for people who are on a tight budget.This is a type of casserole that is eaten in South Africa. The exact range of ingredients that are used in potjiekos vary in different parts of the country. In fact, a large number of famous South African chefs have their own special recipes. However, everyone seems to agree that this casserole features meat and vegetables cooked in thin gravy.

Chambo with Nsimba

People who are planning a trip to Malawi will want to make sure that they try this local dish, which is the pride of the nation. Chambo is a special type of fish that is caught in Lake Malawi and is eaten with nsimba, or chips. Therefore, this dish closely resembles the British dish of fish and chips and is served with a special lightly-spiced pumpkin relish.

Ugali

This traditional cornmeal dish is a staple of the African diet and is usually mixed with milk or cheese. Ugali can be eaten alone as a breakfast dish or as the accompaniment to a stew or other type of dish. Most African families grow up eating ugali.

Irio

This dish of mashed peas and potatoes is popular in Kenya and is often served with stew.

Mandazi

People who have a sweet tooth are sure to love munching on mandazi. This is a type of sweet doughnut that is popular in Tanzania and is eaten with coffee.
