London Declared European Capital Of Shopping
|
Covent Garden, London |
Like London wasn't getting enough attention already with the up coming Golden Jubilee of the Queen and the Olympic Games, now it's been also named Europe's top shopping destination.
London beat off stiff competitors like Madrid, Barcelona, Paris and Rome to be crowned the best European city for shopping in the Globe Shopper City Index - Europe. Belgrade, Oslo and Geneva were judged the least attractive cities for shoppers.
To create this top were taken into consideration 33 cities from all over Europe, scored out on their shopping, affordability, convenience, hotels and transport, and culture and climate.
London can offer great shopping experiences to all kind of shoppers, some of it's best shopping areas being the trendy Carnaby Street, the shops around Covent Garden, the back streets of Soho, the arcades of Bond Street and High Street Kensington.
For fashionistas planning a city break, London is heaven. There wasn't really a need for a year long study to tell anyone that. Though London is not exactly what you would call an affordable city - it scored 24th on the affordability factor - it has other qualities that make people flock to the UK's capital.
I think it's safe to say that the cultural heritage, the museums and the events organized in a city are what drive in the tourists. Take care of that and they will take care of the shopping. After all, it's always nice to say you bought that gorgeous dress while enjoying the holiday of a lifetime in a marvelous city.
However, as retailers open more boutiques worldwide, the shopping experience, the merchandise and the window designs become all the same everywhere. They call it globalization, mind you. But I think every time they open a new, let's say, Zara shop, a little fairy dies and the magic of shopping dies with it.
