Madrid's San Miguel Market in 25 Mouthwatering Photos

We were first introduced to Mercado de San Miguel (San Miguel Market) by Lauren from Madrid Food Tour while joining one of their cultural & culinary tours. The market is close to Plaza Mayor, but without guidance, one could easily pass by it thinking it’s yet another of the many beautiful buildings Madrid so proudly features.

While approaching, the beautiful iron work catches the eye in the first place. The market looks very modern, since it has been recently refurbished, while in fact it is one of the oldest covered markets in Madrid (nearly a century old).

But once you step inside, a food lovers Mecca reveals before your eyes. San Miguel Market is SO different from any other market we encountered in our travels! And while before I was struggling to make up my mind between the beautiful architecture of Mercado Central from Valencia and the perfect fruit stands of La Boqueria Food Market from Barcelona, I think a new winner is rising.

The stands of San Miguel Market are an eye candy, dressed in ready to eat local dishes. This is not your typical market where you go to buy the groceries from just because they are fresher than at the local supermarket. It is a bustling place, reminiscent of a typical Spanish tapas bar.

Here you can find anything from stuffed olives, creative tapas, pintxos, delicious pastries, colorful cocktails, you name it! There are some fresh fish stalls too, but for me, they weren't the biggest attraction. What fascinated me beyond imagination were the twenty something shops serving miniature dishes. You can easily have the meal of your life here, all you have to do is walk around, point your finger at the tapas of your choice, and then eat it the Spanish way, at the bar, standing. For the next sample you can move to a nearby stand and no one will hold a grudge. Washing everything down with vermouth, tinto de verano or sangria is a must!

- A Valencian Corner: The Silk Exchange, The Central Market And The Church Of Saint John
I´ve seen The Silk Exchange (La Lonja de la Seda) from Valencia (Spain) a thousand times. I love it and I could see it a thousand times more and still wouldn't get tired of it. The place is not very big and lacks furniture, but the huge wooden doors,...
