Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival Queen Elected

Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival Queen 2012

After a long and extravagant gala, the queen of the 2012 Santa Cruz de Tenerife Carnival was elected on Wednesday. She is 22-year-old, her name is Carmen Gil Gonzalez and she was wearing a gorgeous dress called 'Imperio' by designer Santi Castro.

This year's carnival theme is a beautiful and melancholic one - the 'Flower Power' and the 60s and during the lively and colorful parade introduction, the audience could listen to songs from the period, like Yellow Submarine (Beatles), Aquarius (FifthDimension), Satisfaction (Rolling Stones), and Stand By Me (Ben E. King).

After a long and extraordinary gala, Carmen Gil González was crowned Carnaval Queen 2012 at the Gala Election in Santa Cruz’ Recinto Ferial. She was one of twelve girls competing for the title, and I can't even begin to imagine how she must have felt when she heard her name in the same sentence with 'queen'.

It was a breathtaking colorful gala, as the Carnival of Santa Cruz in the Canary Islands is the second-largest Carnival celebration in the world and aspires to become a World Heritage Site.

The festival has two parts: the official Carnival, and the Carnival on the street. Basically the party starts once the queen has been elected. Parades and people dressed up in fancy costumes take the streets and the party goes on and on, night after night, till the Ash Wednesday when the burial of the sardine is celebrated in mourning atmosphere. However, the party starts up again the following weekend, known as the weekend of the piñata.
