The Ascot Festival of Food and Wine
When most people think of Ascot, they think of the glamour and excitement of horse racing. There's no denying this is a huge draw: every year hundreds of thousands of racing fans make their way to Ascot's race days. For many, though, racing isn't the only attraction. Ascot race days also play host to other events such as the Ascot Festival of Food and Wine. The 2012 festival takes place on Saturday 8th September.
The Festival of Food and Wine began in 2007 as the Ascot Festival of Food; 2012 marks its first year as a joint food and wine festival. Wine connoisseurs Bibendum will be hosting wine tastings and other events. Connoisseurs can pick up some new knowledge, while first-timers can learn about the fascinating world of wine.
Wine tastings aren't the only special events at the festival. Food writer and chef Valentine Warner will be cooking live; racegoers can watch an expert work before having the chance to taste some of his dishes. The Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxford Local Food Group and The Hampshire Fare will also be teaching attendees about the range of local foods available.
Although tastings and demonstrations are bound to attract many, the heart of the festival remains its market. Over 30 food, wine, ale and cider producers will be showcasing their wares at the festival. The festival features local producers from the Thames valley and beyond, showcasing local hand-crafted bread, cheese, ale, cider, pastries and preserves as well as game and other meats. Imported delicacies from around the world will also be on offer, particularly a wide selection of wines.
Racegoers who want to pick up some fresh bread, local cheese or fine wine but shudder at the thought of carrying their shopping around all day can use the festival's Shop and Drop facility to collect their purchases at the end of the race day.
Appealing though the food and wine will be, racegoers shouldn't miss the day's excitement on the track, which features the Ladbroke's Mobile Handicap Stakes, one of Britain's top three-year-old handicaps. With over £150,000 at stake, this is a major event for three-year-olds. There are a total of seven races throughout the day, beginning at 1.30 and ending at 4.50. The Ladbroke's Mobile Handicap starts at 3.45.
The festival will be held in the race course's Grandstand Admission area, beginning when gates open for the race day at 11 am, and ending shortly after the last race at 5 pm. The racecourse itself is located less than an hour from London and less than 20 minutes from the hotels in Windsor. Tickets to the festival are included with race tickets; these begin at £16.20 for an advance Grandstand Admission ticket.
