The Best Late Night Haunts For Visitors to Barcelona

It’s no secret that Barcelona is one of the most vibrant and energetic cities to visit in Western Europe. A bustling coastal city and a jewel in the Spanish crown, Barcelona not only offers some outstanding attractions, but also a variety of nightlife and entertainment activities to enjoy into the early hours.

Barcelona is very popular with stag dos and hen nights, for those looking to enjoy their last nights of freedom in a cosmopolitan city that rarely sleeps – except, of course, for siestas!

Whether you are travelling into Barcelona on a weekend or weekday, there is usually a theme night available to keep you occupied. With so much choice in and around La Rambla, the vast boulevard which stretches from Placa de Catalunya to the Port Vell, it is all about finding a hideout that’s your own cup of tea.

Here are some of the leading late night haunts for backpackers and travellers looking to make the most of what Spain’s second city has to offer:

between two beers

Ale & Hop

Connoisseurs of ale will greatly enjoy the rotating menu of Catalan craft brews available on tap at the Ale & Hop on La Ribera. This lively bar also offers great food and beautifully ripe tomatoes that are sweet and refreshing in the summer sun.

Café de I'Opera

For culturally-aware travellers insistent on taking a visit to La Ramblas, the first port of call for refreshment is Café de I’Opera. Remodelled as a modernista café-bar in 1929, it is said the likes of Bunuel, Dali and Lorca used to meet for martinis – how’s that for heritage?!

Barcelona Pipa Club

A unique bar dedicated to pipe smoking and the legend that is Sherlock Holmes, Barcelona Pipa Club is hidden away in the arcaded Placa Reial in the Barri Gotic. After taking the three flights of steps you’ll be transported into a cosy bar with banquettes, traditional armchairs and complimentary newspapers – one of a dying breed of establishments to still own a 6am licence!

Generator Barcelona

Located in one of the city’s trendiest hostels, Generator Barcelona’s Fiesta Gracia bar offers a lively and vibrant atmosphere with Manhattans and Mojito’s that don’t come any better elsewhere! Open every day from 8am – 2am, its bar also offers ‘Tapas on tap’ with small snacks designed to appease those midnight munchies!

Les Gens Que J’Aime

This dimly-lit basement bar has once been home to Hollywood star, Gwyneth Paltrow for an entire evening, who is said to have popped in once for a drink and ended up staying all night! With an intimate atmosphere and luscious cocktails, soft jazz and soul background music creates an ambience akin to that of a 1920’s bordello-esque evening lounge.

Tinta Roja

Whether you’re already a fan of the tango, or you’d just like to experience something typically Spanish and enchanting, Tinta Roja is a temple in Poble Sec which boasts a 1940’s-style Buenos Aires dance hall. Enjoy contemporary dance and traditional cocktails and light bites.

La Macarena Club

Widely regarded as the underground gem of the city, La Macarena offers a rough-and-ready nightclub experience with an intimate, sweatbox of a club. With underground deep house and techno whipping the masses into frenzy, it is certainly a unique partying experience with impressive resident DJs and guests from around the globe.

Sala Apolo

One of the most popular clubs in Barcelona, Sala Apolo’s 1940’s dancehall makes for an awe-inspiring atmosphere with a plethora of traditional music on offer from African and Latin to Funk and Reggae.

Summer is understandably the best time of the year to experience Barcelona’s nightlife at its very best; with rooftop DJ sets and beach bars blaring out till sunrise. But its cosmopolitan mix ensures it is well worth a visit all year round.
