The Loneliest Man On Earth

Amazon sunset

Deep in the Brazilian Amazon jungle lives a fascinating man. He's in his late 40's, he always carries a bow-and-arrow and he's the last survivor of his tribe. He lives in complete isolation and he is determined to fight for his freedom till the last breath. Nobody knows his name, nor the name of his long disappeared tribe. Nobody knows why they are gone. And chances are nobody will ever find out.

The man is known for building a distinctive style of hut - a tiny shelter of palm thatch, with a mysterious hole dug in the center of the floor. A village of identical huts was found in the rain forest - run over by a bulldozer. Now you do the math!

Brazilian officials knew about his existence for about 15 years. They tried to "rescue" him and establish peaceful contact several times but all they got was an arrow in one of their agents chest. So in 2007 they decided to let him be and declared a 31-square-mile area around him off-limits to trespassing and development, an unprecedented decision.

Now the officials are waiting. They hope that some day the man will chose to come out and greet his advanced civilization fellows with a smile. Well, don't hold your breath! I bet this man knows better. While the rest of us live in 3sqm boxes, pay taxes and hope for our savings to grew faster for us to afford a two weeks trip into the Amazonian rain forests, this man is living our dream holiday. Rumour has it that we are social animals. But it looks to me that this guy sees freedom way more important than tea parties. As for me, next time I feel lonely, I will think of him.
