Krakow was out first city ever to visit in Poland, therefore we knew little to nothing about the customs, people and cuisine of the place. We were expecting a whole world of new experiences, but we never thought Poland was as sophisticated and glamorous as we discovered it to be.
During our one and only evening in Krakow, we decided to dine at Oranzeria Restaurant, as we were told it had the best views in town. Oranzeria Restaurant is located on the top floor of the 4-star Hotel Kossak, and from the terrace we got to enjoy a magnificent sunset over Krakow, Vistula River and Wawel Castle.
The day had been terribly hot, but the moment we stepped on the rooftop terrace of Oranzeria, the world seemed painted in different colors all of a sudden. The new perspective over the city, the soft and refreshing breeze, the tranquility of the place... it was absolutely magnificent and exactly what we needed!
Apparently the other guests thought the same, as nobody cared about the air conditioned salon, but everybody wanted to have their own secret corner on the terrace.
We didn't know much about Polish cuisine then, and we don't pretend to know much now either, and as this was basically out first contact with Polish cuisine, we didn't really know what to expect. Nevertheless, the menu surprised us in the best possible way from starter to dessert.

We usually tend to go for the most unexpected combinations of flavors, in a never-ending quest to educate out senses. The moment we started reading Oranzeria Restaurant's menu we already knew that out taste buds were in for a wonderful roller-coaster ride.
Now it is true that the dished here are not exactly what you would call traditional Polish. Oranzeria Restaurant serves what is more of a European fusion cuisine with a Polish touch, but I believe it is the Polish character that transcends and makes these dished so interesting, intriguing and tasty at the same time. Every dish was a new experience, as new fresh herbs joined the scene and we embraced and savored more unexpectedly combinations of flavors.

It's useless to say that by the time we got to dessert, we started having doubts if we could order anything else or not. The size of the beautifully decorated dishes that one after the other joined out table, and the fact that we didn't have the heart to leave anything on the plate, almost got us to the verge of skipping the dessert. I have no idea how in the end we managed to make room for what seemed to us the most unusual dish on the menu, hence, the pear tart with Gorgonzola, hazelnut sauce and herb honey, one of the most strange and delightful combination of flavors our taste buds ever handled.

I think the best way to describe our experience at Oranzeria Restaurant would be a circus of flavors served in front of some of the most magnificent views ever. Following the Moon's trajectory on the sky and over the Vistula River during or meal, was one of the most surreal and romantic experiences we had in Poland.
