5 Great Towns to Visit in Hertfordshire
If you’re thinking about taking a weekend away in the South of England, you will likely consider the usual places. Cornwall, Norfolk and London immediately spring to mind.
However, whilst these are all good places to visit, there is a hidden gem of a county which you may not have considered. With its lush green hills, thick wooded forests, ancient cities and cultural diversity, Hertfordshire is one of the UK's best-kept secrets. Here are 5 great towns to visit in Hertfordshire.
St Albans
Starting with St Albans, where the Magna Carta, one of the greatest pieces of constitutional work in British history was written, there are activities for the family and couples alike. With family-friendly activities such as the Butterfly Museum, numerous wildlife parks and a wide range of other activities, it is suitable for all ages. The iconic Cathedral and the old quarter of the town, give a cultural experience which is often overshadowed by the great churches of the south, but more than holds its own with its grandeur and beauty.
Tring
Ideally located on the train line down from London, Tring provides a small town cultural experience which could not be more different from the capital. With an assortment of spas, small cafes and boutique restaurants, it offers a quiet retreat to unwind and relax. If relaxing and appreciating the old architecture aren’t your thing, then the well-known Tring Brewery which produces a whole range of beers may be more to your liking. It offers a range of tours and is an enjoyable experience for a whole range of people.
Hemel Hempstead
This town features what many other towns in Hertfordshire do, the old walls and narrow streets, however, there are things which separate Hemel Hempstead from the rest of Hertfordshire. One family-friendly attraction is the indoor snow slope at The Snow Centre, but there are also acres of country parks and even several vineyards. With dozens of active attractions, and plenty of places to stay (just check out ihg.com), Hemel Hempstead is truly one of Hertfordshire’s hidden gems.
Watford
Whilst when Watford is mentioned, many would assume that it is more London than Hertfordshire, this is simply not the case. Watford features a range of great things to do for all ages. With 43 natural spaces open to the public this separates it from the traditional inner city experience you would expect if you imagined a trip to Watford! You might even catch a glimpse of Watford FC mad Elton John!
Stevenage
Similar to Watford, many people believe that Stevenage is London-centric, again this is not true. Featuring theatres, even more country parks and a surprisingly vibrant nightlife for you to enjoy, Stevenage is an ideal stopping point into, or out of, the capital and is easily accessible even if just for a day trip.
With these 5 towns to visit on London’s doorstep, Hertfordshire is surely worth a visit!
