Cornwall is a true gem in the crown of England and one that visitors coming from near or far should make the journey to see. The county offers culture, history, fantastic cuisine, stunning scenery and more. The best news of all is that you are no longer impelled to spend several arduous hours in a car to get there, as Cornwall is now reachable by plane. In fact, if you fly it takes just over an hour to get there from London. To help you get the best out of a short trip to Cornwall we’ve prepared a must-see guide - read on to discover what delights await you on a visit to England’s most Southwesterly county.
Must Stay
If you only have 48 hours to spend in the county it seems only necessary to indulge in some truly luxury accommodation and the Old Parsonage, the Lower Barns and the Scarlet Hotel are the ideal choice for this. The latest is just a stone’s throw from Newquay Airport the Scarlet provides a modern place to relax in complete luxury. Every room has fantastic sea-views and come nighttime make sure you don’t miss sunset. You can enjoy this from the comfort of your suite or from the Hotels chic relaxation terrace, which offers wide, uninterrupted views out over the Atlantic Ocean. The hotel also has a fantastic restaurant, which serves up fresh seasonal cuisine –expect everything from seafood to game and an array of stunning veggie dishes. The real show-stopper of the Scarlet though is its very own Ayurvedic Spa, where you can indulge in a range of treatments, soak in their reed-cleaned pool, drift off in a relaxation pod, or watch the stars by night from their wood-fired hot tub.
For those on a budget the Porthtowan Backpackers makes an excellent choice, as it is family run, clean, friendly and just a short trip from Newquay. You’ll have fantastic access to the beach, coast path and some of the best surfing waves in Cornwall. Of course if you want some excellent late letting options Cornwall has some great options for this as well.
Must Eat
It’s not just great seafood that is on offer in Cornwall, though of course there is plenty of this, but a whole range of restaurants offering world class cuisine. For fine dining check out Number 6 in Padstow, Nathan Outlaw at the St Enodoc Hotel and the Tresanton in St Mawes. Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurant is still the must-visit place to taste the flavours of the ocean - don’t leave without tasting the local Porthilly oysters. And remember if you can’t get a table you can always eat at the bistro bar.
If you’re looking for a great lunch spot check out one of Cornwall’s many beach-cafes. Gylly beach café in Falmouth offers everything from a tasty Gylly Burger (which comes with streaky bacon, garlic yarg, hand-cut fries and salad) to a rather delicious Heritage Carrot & Quinoa Salad. Porthminster beach café, in St Ives does excellent Mediterranean and Asian seafood cuisine and a very good traditional Fish & Chips made with sustainable haddock.
Must Drink
If you are partial to a jar of local ale head to the Cornish Arms near Padstow for some excellent choices coupled with some good old-fashioned Cornish cheer. If you like to sip something a little more sophisticated come evening-time why not check out the bar at the Cornwall Hotel. They serve a range of tantalising cocktails, in an atmosphere that only seeks to add to your experience even more.
Must Visit
Just because you are out of the city it doesn’t mean you aren’t in the perfect place to soak up a bit of culture. For a gallery experience equalling that of any urban institution head to the Tate St Ives, where they have an excellent permanent collection as well as regularly changing exhibitions. Buy the ticket that also gives you access to the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden and then take the short stroll up the hill to this afterwards- the experience is an intimate insight into the home and work of the artist and is truly very captivating.
Tintagel Castle on the north coast of Cornwall is place of historic legend. Whether you have kids with you or not, go and visit this relic of a 5th century castle and discover the alleged birthplace of King Arthur for yourself. Not far away, the St Nectan's Glen Waterfall offers the perfect mix of magic and nature. In South Cornwall, the Lost Gardens of Heligan and Eden Project are a must for those with a green thumb.
No visit to Cornwall would be complete without an invigorating stroll along one of its many beaches. Our favourite is Gwithian a long sandy beach on the north coast. Enjoy the sea-air, take in the dramatic scenery and look out for seals, dolphins and even whales, which may well be splashing around in the waves.
How to Get There
You can fly to Newquay airport from London for as little as £28.00 each way if you book ahead. Flights are also available from Liverpool, if you’re travelling from the north. This takes 1 hour and depending on when you book costs roughly the same as travelling from London. There are also regular trains running to the county from all of the major UK cities - the scenery you’ll see from the train is so stunning it’s almost a holiday in itself.
