6 People You Must Meet In Egypt
Egypt is one of the oldest civilisations in the world. Which means, this country has been home to many, many people. Travel to Sharm el Sheikh and you’ll understand why this diverse culture is full of so many famous characters. When you are visiting Egypt, here are 6 people you should not go home without meeting:
A Bedouin tribesman
The nomadic Bedouin tribesmen populate Egypt’s deserts, and still live according to many of their ancient traditions. There are, however, some Bedouin settlements you can visit, and where the locals would be happy to teach about their way of life. Try some of their delicious food, including their special unleavened bread, and buy some handcrafted jewelry for souvenirs.
The Sphinx of Giza
Yes, it’s a tourist trap. But it’s a honey-pot destination for a reason. The Pyramids and the Sphinx are must-see sights in Egypt, but if you’re looking for something a little different, try visiting during one of the nightly light shows. There’ll be music, and crazy colors and some very dramatic storytelling, that will make you appreciate the extraordinary history of these giant constructions.
Tutankhamun
One of the most famous names in Egyptian history, King Tut is a figure who’s story you must discover on any trip to Egypt. Visit his tomb in the Valley of the Kings, or see the relics found there in Cairo’s Egyptian Museum. The government have declared many of the objects too delicate to travel out of the country, so while there are some artifacts on show all over the world, the best and the oldest are found in their country of origin.
A camel
Ok, so a camel isn’t really a person, but spend an afternoon on the back of one, and you’ll discover it to have more than enough personality to be human. You won’t have difficulty finding someone offering a camel tour of the desert, and if you’re feeling really adventurous, try an overnight journey. There’s nothing quite like sleeping under the desert stars, listening to your camel snore.
A Blue-Hole tour guide
This famous diving site is supposed to be one of the best in the world. The network of underwater caves makes a fascinating setting for the rich underwater life of the Red Sea. But it is also known for being treacherous, so don’t dive without a guide. Find someone who knows the area, can show you the best of the underwater world, and you’re in for the best dive of your life.
A monk of Saint Catherine’s Monastery
This monastery, built on site where Moses is alleged to have seen The Burning Bush, is one of the oldest in the Christian tradition. Set at the foot of Mount Sinai, this beautiful religious settlement is a destination in its own right, although for the best experience, combine with a visit up mountain. Many people climb over night for the chance to watch the sunrise from the top, and if you can muster the energy to get up early, you won’t be disappointed.
