The great thing about London is that, no matter how many times you visit, there's pretty much always somewhere new to discover. If you've never been to Shoreditch, now's the time to rectify that, since there is just so much to see and do.
You'll find Shoreditch in the East End of London, home to the famous Brick Lane, quirky shops and loads of bars and clubs. It's a great place to go if you fancy buying some unusual clothes or vintage furniture, eating the best curry in London, checking out some off-the-wall art galleries or seeing some live music. But what are the top things to do?
Eating in Brick Lane
Personally, I don't think anyone should miss out on trying some of the great curries available at Brick Lane. Now, I'd recommend a restaurant or two, but the truth is that amazing curry houses here line the whole street - and it's not exactly a short street at that.
So, instead, I thought I'd give you a little advice. The majority of the restaurants here station staff outside to shout offers at you as you walk by, which can be a little annoying - especially if you're not actually there to eat. On the other hand, it can work to your advantage - particularly if you're in a big group and the staff spy the chance to make a profit.
How? Well, there are so many restaurants here that you can usually haggle even better deals on the door. Try not to be too demanding, though! And remember, if you're not keen on what you see, there are loads of other choices just steps away.
Brick Lane Market
The next absolute must is paying a visit to Brick Lane Market. If you can, visit on a Sunday, since this is when stalls from loads of second-hand sellers set up along the streets too. That said, there's plenty to see seven days a week, so it's not a disaster if that doesn't fit in with your schedule.
Part of the charm of this market is that there is a certain air of chaos about it - there's just so many different kinds of things for sale, from jewellery to veg, so many people and so much noise. Just try to soak it all up and, if you spy something you fancy, pick up a bargain too!
Art galleries
In recent years, Shoreditch - and Brick Lane in particular - has become home to more and more art galleries. These often showcase works by lesser-known and upcoming artists, so they're great places to get a glimpse of something new.
Among your options is the Brick Lane Art Gallery, which displays contemporary and fine art. Opened it 2006, it houses work by both UK and international artists across a broad range of disciplines, including sculpture, paintings, photography and video.
Nightlife
Shoreditch is also a brilliant place for a night out, so it's well worth checking out what's on at the local bars and clubs before you travel. One of the best-loved venues is Vibe Bar, which stages different kinds of events across the week, like open mic nights, and serves up some pretty tasty food, too!
Probably one of the most iconic venues, though, is 93 Feet East, which you'll find at 150 Brick Lane. What makes this place such a popular spot is its dedication to great live music combined with its intimate atmosphere. So, if you're planning a night out in Shoreditch, this should definitely make your shortlist.
I always imagined that I would move to Seoul to teach English, travel and somehow still save money. That would have played out so well if only I had stayed away from the shops. In other cities this may not be too difficult. Just steer clear from malls,...
