Today we waked up in Aarhus, Denmark. This is the first day since we started our Interrail trip through Europe that we didn't use our Interrail Passes, but instead we dedicated the whole day to the city of Aarhus.
As a matter of fact, we didn't get to do much exploring though. We did visit the city center last night, but it was raining and we didn't get to see nearly as much as we would have liked to.
Today we devided the time between the Botanical Garden and Den Gamle By. It was raining in the morning and the weather forecast was pretty pesimistic and predicted rain for the whole week, so we took our chances and went for a walk through the Botanical Garden first, umbrella in hand, which kind of made us feel ridiculous as nobody was actually carrying an umbrella. We found out later that the locals rather use ponchos instead of umbrellas and the simple fact that we were carrying one was giving us in as being tourists.
Rain aside, Aarhus Botanical Garden is superb. I sticked my nose in over a dozen different colored roses and they all smelled divine.
We were surprised to discover that even the gardeners spoke perfect English in Denmark, in contrast to Poland where only the young people spoke English and the staff in the railway stations, on trains, supermarkets and other small businesses where we stopped by didn't speak English at all.
Next, after my walking in nature urges were completely satisfied, we went to visit Den Gamle By, situated just next to the Botanical Garden and from where horse pulled carriages were taking visitors on a lasurely trip through the park.
Den Gamle By totally took us by surprise. You can more or less make a first impression what this old town museum is about just from looking over the fence, but we were't neatly expecting what we've discovered inside.
With only about 80 houses, Den Gamle By is not a big theme park, or museum, as you wish to call it, but it took us the whole afternoon to visit it.
One of the greatest surprises we've had was that there were people dressed in traditional costumes walking around and all they did, from cleaning, to chatting, to daily chores seemed natural and perfectly fit the atmosphere of the place.
The place is so much fun and almost all houses are open and you can actually go inside and see the settings people use to leave in. Every room is explaind in Danish, English and German and we feel like we've learnt quite a lot about the Danish people and their customs from this visit.
Another interesting idea, the people at Den Gamle By had, was reproducing the old rides and toys children had before the industrialization era. What's even more unbelievable for me is that kids of all ages enjoyed this kind of entertainment just as much as they would have enjoyed an ultra modern toy.
