Chinese Food You Wouldn't Consider Edible in Other Countries

China, when it comes to food, might be an extreme country for those who are not adventurous eaters. Why? There is a common saying that “The Chinese eat everything with four legs except tables—and everything that flies except airplanes” and seems to be true. Chinese do really eat everything and they do not even get disguised by cat or dog meat.

After living in China for nearly 2 years I got used to local delicacies such as spicy chicken feet, crunchy bees and spicy cockroaches. Today, I would like to share my top 5 Chinese dishes not everyone dares to try so do read the menu properly when ordering Chinese-style breakfast or lunch.

1. Grilled chicks

Salt-baked or grilled chicks are sold in China almost everywhere. They are vacuum-packed and ready to eat so everyone can find them in a local shop or supermarket. Chinese often buy them when going for a long-distance train ride from one province to another, which might take up to 24 hours. You might go for a spicy version or the mild one if it does not disgust you.

2. Spicy chicken/duck feet

Chicken and duck feet are used in several regional Chinese cuisines, especially Hunan and Chongqing as these regions are well known for extremely spicy food. Both can be served as a beer snack, cold dish, soup or main dish. They are usually deep fried, then steamed before being stewed. Funny thing is that a lot of Chinese students would prefer pack of chicken feet than a pack of crisps.

3. Snails

Snails taste surprisingly well with the texture close to minced beef. Probably, the biggest issue people have with them, is that they are served in shells. It also makes it very hard to eat - especially to those who try it for the first time. The best snails are served in Guilin, Guangxi Province.

4. Dog meat


For many it's a cruelty beyond recognition to eat human's best friend. Debatable for sure, but in China it's not a taboo to eat dog's meat, or see it baked and hung in a local market. Its meat makes your body temperature raise, so people rarely eat it - especially in the hot climate. Also, it's very expensive, so you can find only in very good restaurants (how bizarre).

5. Snake meat

It sounds scare for most to eat a snake, but it's actually very delicious! It tastes like a very good fish. I must admit that I will eat a snake every time it's offered to me, and I wish it gets a bigger popularity in the West, so that I can have it when I go back home.
