Deadvlei. The 900 Years Old Tree Graveyard Of Namibia
|
Deadvlei, Namibia |
One doesn't see very often 900 years old dead trees still standing. Let alone in the middle of the dessert. That's why Deavlei is such a special and alien place and Flickr user gregw66 did a great job at photographing the white clay pan, located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, in Namibia.
Deavlei was formed when a nearby river flooded, creating pools, which allowed vegetation to grow. Then, 900 years ago, as the area was hit by drought, beautiful red, orange and pink sand dunes encroached on the pan, cutting off the trees from the river.
The Deadvlei pan is arguably surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world and it is estimated that these acacia and camel thorn trees last lived when William the Conqueror invaded England. The trees died, but they didn't decompose. They simply scorched black in the sun and became monuments to their own destruction. But, as always, there's more than meets the eye, and some species of plants and animals adapted even in this harsh life conditions.
