Exploring the Italian Lakes: Lake Como and Lake Maggiore

When it comes to Italian lakes, Lake Como is the first one to pop into people's minds, partly because of all the Hollywood movies filmed there, partly because a few years ago George Clooney bought a villa here. But if Como is my favorite Italian lake, Lake Maggiore is a very close second.

Lake Como from the gardens of Villa Melzi

At the beginning of May, my husband and I went on a trip that covered both lakes. I must admit that for us, this turned out to be one of the most enjoyable trips ever. Because of the period of the year chosen, the gardens surrounding the lakes were in bloom. We also got spoiled rotten in some amazing hotels. The food was fantastic, plus we were lucky enough to have great weather as well.

While both lakes are very popular with tourists, they are also very different. Lake Como is extremely popular with the Americans (George Clooney is in part to be 'blamed' for this), while Lake Maggiore is mostly popular with the Swiss, French and German. Lake Como stands out for the luxurious villas and perfectly manicured gardens along the shores; Lake Maggiore on the other hand is perfect for lazy weekends, long walks among colorful houses and enjoyable atmosphere.

Ascona by night

We managed to visit an impressive number of villas and gardens, including our all time favorite Gardens of Villa Melzi, Villa Balbianello where Star Wars and a James Bond movie were filmed, the grounds of Villa Serbelloni with its amazing views over the lake, and revisit the famous Villa Carlotta, to mention just a few.

We also visited the beautiful town of Ascona, in the Swiss part of Lake Maggiore, discovered the most romantic spot on the Italian riviera during a few relaxing days at Cannero, visit the magnificent gardens of Villa Taranto, and explored the breathtaking Isola Bella, Isola Madre and Isola Pescatori near Stresa. It was a fun filled trip and we took a ridiculous number of photos which I can't wait to share with you in future posts.
