After visiting the souvenir market, we went to the fish market just across the street. The fish market is situated by the harbor and the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bryggen, and though it wasn't as huge as we expected it to be, I believe its charm lays in the fact that it is very much an open kitchen.
You can chose between a myriad of fish and seafood varieties and they will cook it right in front of you.
The Bergen fish market is opened all day long, and it's probably the most crowded place in town. While we've been told that locals know better and stay away from this highly touristic and overpriced market, the casual tourist seems to be attracted to this place like moths to light. And if I were to find an explanation as of why, I would say it's location, location and the fact that you can fish your own food, or at least you can chose the piece of crab you want on your plate.
I am crazy about salmon, therefore for me, this was the yummiest thing in the whole fish market.
There was lots of canned fish that you could take home as a souvenir for the loved ones, or for the person you love best (yourself!), but still, the fresh seafood was the main attraction of the Bergen Fish Market.
They even sold homemade paella!
But then it wasn't all fish and seafood at the fish market...
We tasted for the first time in our lives elk, Rudolf reindeer (OMG! I ate Rudolf! What does this say about me?) and whale sausage and the whale one was by far my favorite.
And for dessert, there were lots of deliciously looking fruits to chose from.
But not all fish was fresh. Dry fish was hanging in the stalls too.
However, this was the most hilarious part. Besides the impressive array of languages people working at the fish market spoke (I've never imagined one needed to be a polyglot to sell fish!), they also accepted payments in diamonds and gold!
And just in case you are already drooling on the keyboard, here are some prices to leave you with your mouth open :P
