Holidaying at Home: Why It’s Not Such a Terrible Idea
In the latter part of the last century, the wide availability and relative low cost of air travel made holidaying abroad an achievable dream. Costa-del-Sols and home-from-homes have sprung up in Spain and Greece, and 18 year olds seek rite-of-passage in Ibiza and Kavos, rather than Blackpool and Brighton.
The many Victorian seaside towns are husks of their former selves, still dependent on tourist trade they see little of. However, many sun-seeking natives fleeing to foreign shores for their holidays may never get the chance to discover just how much Britain has to offer. The UK may be small but from Cornish coves to Scottish Highlands, it is a country with some truly fantastic holiday destinations.
Here’s why you might want to opt for a staycation this year:
Flexibility
No one can afford to be missing work, and families with school-aged children will find that councils are getting increasingly strict with parents who holiday with their children during term time. Holidaying within the UK means you can be liberal with your time, and organisation will be much easier. It also means you don’t need a passport, so you will avoid hassle with first-time holidaymakers in your group.
More for less
Whether you opt to sightsee in the UK’s beautiful cities or take in the magnificent landscapes of the Peak or Lake District, your money will go much further than it will abroad. What might fetch a standard room overseas could put you up in somewhere more elegant in England, such as Home From Home vacation apartments.
Glamping
Glamour camping, more than a fad among students and nature lovers, is a way for holidaymakers bored of the usual fare to have an alternative holiday experience. Stay in a Mongolian yurt or authentic Romany caravan and get the grassroots, adventurous vibe of camping along with the luxury of home comforts. Glamping is an excellent way to adapt the format of a traditional romantic getaway.
No language barriers
The great thing about holidaying at home is that there are no language barriers to contend with. You won’t have to sheepishly ask for la cuenta, or fall at the second conversational hurdle in every discourse.
For a fraction of the cost, you can have an excellent time in the UK and never be too far from home in the event of an emergency. There are arguments to be made for the merits of Marbella over Margate, but both are suited to the tastes of different people.
