Las Fallas Festival Preview: Ninots Exhibition

Even though we have an exciting three day trip to Porto (Portugal) planned at the beginning of March, we are really looking forward for Las Fallas Festival to kick off here in Valencia.

This is our favorite Valencian festival because it's so much fun and the city has a festive mood for days on end. Basically the festival starts on the 1st of March and ends on the 19th, when huge bonfires are organized all over the city and the figurines you see in these pictures are burned to ashes.

We voted for this ninot to be saves from the flames and be placed in the Faller Museum

As we couldn't wait any longer for this year's festivities to begin, we went to see the ninots exhibition open throughout the month of February, up till the 15th of March. The ninots are just parts of the bigger fallas and this exhibition basically offers a preview of some of the best figurines of the year plus the chance for the public to vote for their favorite one. The winners (one for the kids section and one for the grown ups section) are called ninot indultat, and instead of being burned with all the others, are saved in the Faller Museum next to the City of Arts and Sciences.

Some of the ninots are satirical and the fallas in general tend to criticize current events, politicians and public figures and the order of things in general. Needless to say that the economical crisis is a favorite subject this year.

Even the president and the mayor are put in delicate positions, like the puppet below of the current Spanish leader. There was also a puppet of the ex-president, but that wasn't suitable for a family friendly website like this one.

And the lady here is the Mayor of Valencia. She's been the mayor of the city ever since 1991 and last year she's just been reelected. Therefore, she must have done some good...

The Asian products invasion is also criticized... Not everything about globalization is good.

I am always thrilled to spot cats in fallas. I'm a crazy cat lady and I can't help it! ;)
