New UNESCO World Heritage Sites Added To The List
|
Amsterdam canal |
Yesterday the UNESCO committee made official the new World Heritage List. The 34th session of the World Heritage Committee meeting took place in Brazil and 21 new cultural and natural sites were added to the list that totals 911 properties as of 2010.
Among the sites that made it through are the 17th century canal ring area of Amsterdam, the Episcopal City of Albi in France, the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long-Hanoi in Viet Nam, the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka, the Bikini Atoll, nuclear tests site on Marshall Islands and the Putorana Plateau from Russia. The Galapagos Islands were removed from the List of World Heritage in Danger.
The World Heritage List is revised on a yearly basis. The list is ever expanding, but that doesn't mean that from time to time some sites won't loose their prestigious position, being excluded from the World Heritage List due to the changes they might undergo. In order to remain on the list the sites must be protected and preserved by the country in which they reside.
I am proud to have seen 45 out of the 911 sites on the 2010's UNESCO World Heritage List. Still plenty left to see, but it's a good start. Out of my experience, despite the glory and fame a place should gain from being on this list, some sites just don't get lucky with tourist (the Palace and Park of Fontainebleau was deserted when we visited in mid July) and others, despite their historical and cultural or natural value, are just not much to see (the Archivo de Indias in Seville is a boring place filled with archival documents illustrating the history of the Spanish Empire in the Americas and the Philippines). But in general the sites listed in the UNESCO World Heritage List are breathtaking and worth a visit, so it's safe to join the crowds.

Glad That's Over With!
Yesterday was the first day that we start to take reservations here at the campground. It began at 8:00am, and the phone rang constantly. As soon as I finished with one person and hung up the phone, it would ring again instantly. Although we have around...

Overall, A Good Day. But A Little Disappointed...
We came to Gyeongju because there are three UNESCO rated heritage sites here. The city itself is nice enough, but I'm not sure I'd plan a special trip here. Our preference would have been more time in the southern coastal area. Click here to read...

The Ruins At Xochicalco
We've been to several ruins sites in Mexico, and all of them are a little bit different. Yesterday, we made our way to the Unesco World Heritage site of the Xochicalco ruins. This site is fascinating simply because of the size of it, with fantastic...

Searching For Campgrounds
I've been looking for tent camping sites along Lake Superior in Ontario, Canada. There are provincial parks, but their rates seem high. I guess I'm used to paying the senior rate at US National Park and Forest Service campgrounds,...

Photo Of The Day: Quinta Da Regaleira, Sintra
Quinta da Regaleira, Sintra, Portugal I took this picture of Quinta da Regaleira in December. I have no idea if these plants were supposed to be in bloom or not, but they so nicely enhanced my photo! Quinta da Regaleira is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage...
