One Monet Exhibition, Two Monet Exhibitions
|
Terrace at Saint-Adresse by Monet |
It's been over 30 years since Paris hosted a Monet exhibition. But in 2010 the 'Father of Impressionism' is back in the warm Parisian spotlight with not one, but two rival exhibitions - one from the 22nd of September to the 24th of January 2011 at the Grand Palais and the other from the 7th of October 2010 to the 20th of February 2011 at the Musée Marmottan, just a few miles down the road.
The exhibit at the Grand Palais on the Champs Elysées gathered over 200 out of the roughly 2000 artworks Monet painted, including Dejeuner sur l'Herbe from Pushkin Museum in Moscow and Terrace at Saint-Adresse from Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The Grand Palais exhibition is the largest and most complete single collection of Monets the world has ever seen, including some artworks that have never been exhibited in France before and many from private collections.
On the other hand, Musée Marmottan which boasts works donated by Monet's son Michel, puts on show the museum's entire collection of Monets (over 100 paintings), including the classic Impression, Sunrise, which gave Impressionism its name. Grand Palais wanted for their exhibition some of Marmottan's Monets, but the museum refused to lend them a single masterpiece.
Monet is considered to be the father of modern art. Rather than painting different scenes, he took pleasure in painting the same scene in many different ways (see the Water lilies, Rouen cathedral, Giverny), as he explored the relationship between light and colour, reality and impression. Monet was born in Paris therefore I think there's no better place to see his paintings than in Paris. The two exhibitions might have a number of themes in common, but I wouldn't miss eighter of them if I were in Paris.
