Yamdrok Yumtso Lake is one of the three largest holy lakes in Tibet. Surrounded by many snow-capped mountains and fed by numerous small streams, Yamdrok Yumtso Lake is believed to be the transformation of a goddess. The Yamdrok Yumtso Lake has some beautiful and vivid names like Coral Lake, derived from its irregular shape or Green Jade Lake implying its beautiful appearance with smooth and clean waters. Like mountains, lakes are considered sacrosanct by the Tibetan people, as it is believed that they are the dwelling places of protective deities and therefore invested with special spiritual powers. Every year, many followers from Tibet but not only would come here for pilgrimage. It is said that if Yamdrok Yumtso Lake's waters dry, Tibet will no longer be habitable. Well, I guess it wouldn't hurt to protect nature more and consider it holy, be it for scientific reasons or not.
