Spain To Have The Largest High-Speed Rail Network In The World

The new high-speed train Madrid-Valencia
Visiting Madrid? Have you considered a day trip to Valencia too? Of course not; almost four hours by train one way barely leaves any time to visit the city. But that's about to change. On the 18th of December 2010 the new AVE high-speed train that connects Madrid with Valencia will launch and the 438km between the two cities will seem a short relaxing trip. It will take you only 1h 35min at 330km/h to travel from the heart of Spain to the Mediterranean coast, just enough time to watch a movie on the way. The train will leave you in the city centre, next to the Plaza de Torros and only a couple of minutes away from the City Hall and the beautiful cathedral, where the Holy Grail is kept safe. You can loose yourself on the narrow streets of the old El Carmen district, visit de newly restored baroque churches, go shopping, visit the world-famous City Of Arts And Sciences or even go toast yourself on the beach while sipping a Mojito. The new AVE train will run hourly and the ticket will cost 79,80euro; that's about 30euro extra for the new even greener infrastructure that places Spain on top of the list for the largest high-speed rail network in the world. Discounts are available for internet purchases and for return tickets. I personally can't wait for this service to start so I can go back to Madrid and have lunch in the oldest restaurant in the world - Sobrino de Botin. I have no idea how I missed this jewel in the first place!
