Le Train Bleu, Paris
Le Train Bleu Restaurant, Paris

Paris – Le Train Bleu

With stunning opulence and grandeur, the Le Train Bleu is one of the most famous and historical restaurants in France. Superbly decorated with fine ornaments and paintings that capture the imagination, this restaurant is the centre piece of Gare de Lyon station. Opened in 1901 by the Lynon Mediterranean Company, Le Train Bleu is one of the few restaurants left in Paris that offers a true sense of Parisian bistro with every meal they create. Famous for its classic menu, from streak tartare and Paris-break, the food is exquisite and the staff are very hospitable.

Paris – Au Rendez-vous des Chauffeurs

This spectacular restaurant opened in 1904, and it continues to offer guests a luxury service combined with a no-thrills, traditional menu that represents true French taste buds. Au Rendez-vous des Chauffeurs still serves the same clientele that gave it its infamous five star rating, as well as its name.

It was more of a working-class diner when it first opened, and situated directly opposite one of the biggest taxi stands in Paris, the yellow cab drivers were one of its biggest customers. Nowadays however, and having completely revamped itself after the Second World War, it offers its tables to the rich and famous of Paris, while still holding to that traditional feel that made it so popular during the early 1900s.

Madrid – Lhardy

When it comes to Mediterranean food, you can’t get better than the Spanish capital. The older the restaurants, the more cultured and fantastic the food, and in the case of Lhardy, the wine list is just as impressive as the food! With a restaurant upstairs and a downstairs bar resembling a New York speak-easy, Lhardy is a great place to spend the evening, not only for the food but to experience the entertainment too. Located in the city’s newly refurbished market district, make sure you try out their famous take-away broth!

cochinillo
Sobrino de Botin Restaurant, Madrid

Madrid - Sobrino de Botin

'Sobrino de Botin' is certified by the Guinness Book of Records as the world's oldest restaurant that was never closed down. Located in the heart of Madrid, Botin is a typical Spanish four floors restaurant, with a centuries old woodfire oven, dating back to 1725. The house specialties are cochinillo asado and cordero asado, cooked following old style Castilian recipes. Rumor has it Goya himself worked as a dishwasher here for a while, before becoming a famous painter. The restaurant is mentioned in Hemingway’s 'The Sun Also Rises', as the famous American novelist was a regular here in his days in Madrid and even declared it to be his favorite. Well, to be honest, after eating in the oldest restaurant in the world, we came to about the same conclusion.

Rome - La Campana

Rome is one of the world’s oldest cities, you’d expect them to know a little about fine dining. La Campana is one of the city’s finest establishments, and founded in 1518, it is also one of the oldest restaurants in the world. Offering traditional Italian dishes as well as new creations every month, La Campana’s menu is worth its weight in gold!
