Paris is notorious for its high volume of traffic, and with 440km of cycle paths around the French capital it’s no wonder that many residents and visitors are turning to pedal power to get around.
If you are traveling Europe on a shoestring budget, a bike is a great way to tick off all the sights without battling the traffic. But there are more advantages to bikes than just speed – you’ll also help to cut the city’s emissions, and keep yourself fit too!
Get Some Wheels
It goes without saying though that to cycle around Paris you’ll first need to hire a bike, and to do this you have a couple of options. There are numerous companies from which you can hire bikes in Paris, who rent their bikes per the hour, day, or even week.
Additionally like many major cities Paris also has its own bicycle-sharing system, Vélib’, in which you collect a bicycle from one of the many stations around the city, use it to reach your destination and then return it to the nearest Vélib’ station, and only pay for the time in which you actually used the bicycle. These are both cheap options, but it’s down to you to decide which one will suit your needs best.
Sightseeing on Cycles
Once you’ve collected your bike, a great place to start cycling in Paris is at the Bois de Boulogne. This leafy park in the 16th arrondissement is two and a half times the size of New York’s Central Park so it’s the perfect place to get to grips with your hire bike, plus there’s an amusement park with a small zoo.
When it’s time to do some sightseeing, pedal along the bike paths along the River Seine and then take the pedestrian bridge over the Seine to Saint-Cloud Park, to take in some fabulous views over Paris. You can even hire tandem bikes here, which will be a romantic and memorable experience for you and your loved one.
The Louvre Museum square is also an ideal place to cycle, to get up close to the famous glass pyramid. From here head to the Place de la Concorde, an enormous public square that’s home to many impressive monuments.
Pedal-Friendly Paris
It’s also worth noting that as part of the ‘Paris Respire’ (Paris Breathes) campaign, a number of roads and streets in Paris are closed to cars every Sunday, leaving pedestrians, cyclists and rollerbladers free to enjoy the space without its usual traffic.
These car-free zones include all the roads by the River Seine, even the Champs-Elysees, as well as other certain parts of the city, so make sure you’ve got your bike ready for this day.
However whichever day you choose to cycle around Paris you’ll easily find maps with bike routes already plotted for you. Some of the companies also operate organised bike tours around Paris, so if you don’t feel confident enough to cycle by yourself you can still experience the city from the comfort of a saddle.
