There is a huge selection of excellent 5 star hotels across Thailand, but for the ultimate in luxury I prefer the privacy of renting a private Koh Samui villa. Many now come with private chefs, with expertise in both Thai and Western cooking and even such exquisite highlights as your own private cinema or a slide from your bedroom to the infinity pool. Simply bliss.
I’ve searched out the gems that will make it onto my shortlist. You can get more bang for your buck between mid May and the end of June or between September and December. Here are my Top 5 Samui villa rentals. Will they make it on your dream holiday wishlist?

The View
A 5 bedroom villa on Taling Ngam Beach, Koh Samui. As its name suggests, this villa has breathtaking views of the ocean, you can see the sea from almost every room and there are some excellent spots for enjoying the beautiful sunsets. There are some seriously sleek design elements – glass walled living areas, floating glass stairs and a huge open plan dining and kitchen area that seats 24 people. One unusual feature of this villa is a contemporary children’s dorm, with six stylish white bunk beds. It’s a good choice for families travelling together. It’s possible to completely over indulge here, with a Thai chef on hand to whip up signature cocktails and Thai feasts fit for a king. Did I forget to mention the infinity pool, Jacuzzi and massage sala? The perfect choice for families that would like an element of style served with their relaxation.
Villa Lulu
This villa is nestled in the tropical forest of Bang Po, Koh Samui. A villa for those seeking extra lashings of fun. This made my list because of one special feature. When you rise in the morning, there is a novel way to get to the pool. Pop out to the balcony and simply hop on the 78m loop waterslide, which will get you in for a dip in seconds. The villa sleeps up to 10 people and also comes equipped with a games room and no less than 3 jacuzzi baths.
Villa Riva
This beautiful villa marries contemporary design with Thai authenticity. It’s situated on an exclusive cove, practically like having your own private beach. The villa can sleep up to 16 people and is an excellent choice for large groups. You can even hold your wedding there, it has its own marriage gazebo. There are eight staff on hand to cater to your every need. Should you need a tennis coach, personal trainer or even your own personal yoga teacher, this can all be arranged. There is a floodlit tennis court, gym, sauna, steam room and a 10 seater private cinema.
Villa Kalyana
This villa is situated on a beautiful stretch of private beach called Ban Thale in Bang Kao on the south of the island. The location is perfect for relaxation. You can enjoy a romantic candlelit dinner right on the beach – feeling almost like you have the island completely to yourself. The villa has some really lovely traditional design features, including a 200 year old hand carved wood pavilion. The pool has a central grassy area, aptly named ‘Hammock Island’ – the perfect spot for a good book and a cocktail. Other spots to sit back and chill include the library, the massage sala or even the deck of ‘Swisscat’, the villas own catamaran.
Banyan Villas
This villa is situated in an area of tranquility on the North Coast of Samui. There are two villas here, they sleep up to 14 people and would be good for two groups or two families. Guests have access to their own private swimming pool that has a swim up bar and Jacuzzi. The beach here is calm and quiet and there is a range of lovely beach restaurants to choose from within walking distance. The villa is more reasonably priced, suiting those looking for a slice of luxury for less.
But blissful luxury aside, from time to time it is good to dig into the local culture as well. Therefore, some of the activities you shouldn't miss while in Thailand are shopping at a local market, attending a Thai festival and visiting the many and outstanding temples, out of which Wat Rong Khun really stands out of the crowd.
