One of London’s leafiest and most desirable boroughs, it’s easy to see why Hollywood royalty frequently choose Richmond as their home-away-from-home when they’re visiting the capital. The park, the shopping, the river, the architecture – we could go on.
And we will! Here are our top five things to do should you ever be lucky enough to find yourself in one of the most beautiful parts of London.
Sssh! The Secret Ballet Museum
While many people know that The White Lodge in Richmond Park is home to The Royal Ballet School, not a lot of people know that inside hides a tiny museum dedicated to the dance, and filled with the ballet costumes of some of the world’s greatest dancers. You have to ask permission to see the collection, but if you’re a fan of dance it’s well worth the effort.
King Henry’s Mound and Richmond Hill
Something not many Londoners realise is that Richmond is home to some killer views. King Henry’s Mound in Richmond Park and you can enjoy a protected view of St Paul’s Cathedral, more than 10miles away in the heart of the City. The view is protected because it was from here that Henry VIII watched for a sign from St Paul’s that Anne Boleyn had been beheaded, making him free to marry Jane Seymour. On your way up to Richmond Park, make a stop at Richmond Hill just before you reach the park gates and you’ll find one of the most breath-taking views in London waiting for you.
Hacking in the Park
At over 2,500 acres, Richmond Park is simply vast – far too much ground to cover on foot wouldn’t you say? Head down to the Richmond Stables and, if you can prove you can handle a horse, you can go horse riding instead. It makes for an amazing way to explore the hills, forests and lakes of Richmond.
Walking the Thames Path
The Thames Path is the place to head if you fancy a long walk by the water. In fact, as you can see detailed in this travel blog, you can actually walk all the way to Windsor from Richmond if you follow the Thames. Along the way you’ll see Hampton Court Palace, Ham House and more. So step into your sturdiest walking shoes and enjoy all, or part, of this 30-mile river stroll.
Catch a show
One of the grandest looking buildings in the capital, Richmond Theatre, dates back to the 19th century, having kept the Richmond residents entertained since 1899. It’s a little-known fact that productions are often road-tested here before hitting London’s West End, or stop off here as part of a post-West End tour – so get your tickets here and beat the crowds.
