We love it when we stumble upon something that is clearly off the beaten path. Or something that is rather a well guarded local secret. And this is precisely how we felt in Nuremberg, while staying at Steichele Hotel & Weinrestaurant.
The hotel is two underground stops away from the train station, or roughly a ten minute walk from the train station and the city centre. It is situated in the historic centre of Nuremberg, however the small street in front is quiet and guarantees a good night's sleep.
What calls the attention in the first place is the beautiful old wrought iron sign agains the pink facade and the stained glass windows. Steichele Hotel & Weinrestaurant opened its doors for the first time back in 1897, and it still preserves elements from that time period.
While the rooms are nothing fancy, with a rather minimalistic, yet functional decor, the amazingly beautiful restaurant and the food really stand out.
The business has been in the Steichele family for three generations and it is a part of a traditional Nuremberg that you won't encounter every step of the way anymore.
As we enter we discover the restaurant on the right and the bar on the left. The beautiful breakfast room is upstairs but we don't get to see it until the next morning.
The reception area is decked out for Christmas and we are immediately greeted with a smile.
After freshening up, we come down for dinner in the incredibly looking restaurant. The place is packed with small groups having their office Christmas party, as well as couples enjoying a semi-romantic and traditional ambiance. The lively atmosphere is contagious to say the least and we are surprised to see so many locals here.
We can't stop staring at the decor. The chandeliers are made out of deer antlers and stunning wood sculptures representing mythical creatures. The white walls are decorated with old prints and china while the ceiling is covered in wood. It feels like stepping back in time.
We are served a traditional Christmas dinner, consisting of dumpling soup, roasted goose, red cabbage and potato dumplings. We wash down everything with huge pints of beer (German size!) and finish with three generous scoops of ice cream. The dinner is so delicious, hearty and traditionally German that it's impossible not to go to bed with a smile on our faces.
In the morning, we have breakfast in the beautiful room upstairs. It still comes as a surprise, though it has a slightly different character than the restaurant, with a lighter decor and the impressive chandeliers are missing. The buffet consists of plenty of options, all typical German, including wurst, omelette, cheese varieties, cakes and stollen.
Steichele Hotel & Weinrestaurant is surrounded by an old world aura difficult to ignore. If you find yourself in Nuremberg, do yourself a favour and at least have dinner here. You won't regret it!
