Visiting the Factory of Dreams in Germany
I've always associated Germany with fairy-tale magic. And my last visit to Erzgebirge Mountains near the Czech border did nothing but strengthen my beliefs.
After a memorable morning that included a delicious visit to Wippler's Bakery and a stop at Bjoern Koehler's fascinating workshop, at the invitation of Erzgebirge Tourism Board, we had lunch in one of the quirkiest restaurants. The Wolkensteiner Zughotel is hosted in a real train, and serves hearty food in an enchanting atmosphere. They even have a miniature train moving around the car making cute little noises from time to time. Charming!
And since the mood was all set for miniature objects and toys, our next stop was at the Factory of Dreams in Annaberg-Buchholz. The unique private collection put together by Dr. Erika Pohl-Ströher lives up to it's name. It makes you dream of childhood and lets you see the world anew.
There are over 1,500 items on display, anything from nutcrackers, smokers, music boxes, pyramids, matchboxes, nativity scenes and traditional spinning wheels, dating as far back as the 17th century. It's not only the uniqueness of the collection that surprised us, but also the ingenuity of the presentation. This museum is a must visit, believe me! We could hardly leave it behind.
Back to Dresden, at the invitation of airberlin, dinner was served at Italienisches Doerfchen Restaurant right in the Theater Square. They specialize in traditional Saxon cuisine and Italian specialties. In all honesty, the salmon I had here was among the best I had in my life. The atmosphere marches the cuisine, and we could only imagine how glamorous it must feel dinning here after seeing a theater play just across the street. Or attending a wedding here. Or simply enjoying a drink on the terrace while watching the sunset over the Elbe River on a hot summer day.
