Waterloo – An Eye for City Gardens

Summer – the time to get out in the garden! Unfortunately some cities don’t have the space for gardens in residential areas – maybe you have to make do with only a window box! However, London does have a good selection of greenery to enjoy amongst the historic landmarks and city streets. If you don’t have your own garden due to space restrictions, maybe the luxury of a garage is also not possible. Not a problem – taking a train into the UK’s busiest station, Waterloo, is a great way to see the nation’s capital and also some lovely gardens right by Waterloo station or a nearby hotel.

We have nurtured and plucked 3 of the best closest this list.

Victoria Embankment, London

Victoria Embankment Gardens

The gardens along Victoria embankment (split into several individual parks) stretch along the north side of the Thames between the Blackfriars and Westminster Bridges. Crossing Hungerford Bridge from Waterloo will get you into the midst of them. Consistently winning Green Flag awards for green spaces since 2002, these areas afford views of the Thames on one side and iconic London Parliamentary architecture on the other.

Lambeth Palace Gardens and Museum

These small gardens can be viewed by paid entrance to the museum. They are the oldest continuously cultivated gardens in London and for the green-fingered with some regular free time each week – you can volunteer and lend a hand in their upkeep – apply within at http://www.gardenmuseum.org.uk/. The theme of the horticulture is described as 17th century Knot style, in tribute to the royal gardeners and naturalists John Tradescant the elder (and younger) whose tomb is located in the former grounds of St. Mary’s parish church.

The London Eye @ night

Jubilee Gardens

This park was originally named in honour of the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977 and freshened in 2012 just prior to the London Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. This recent re-landscaping has created an ideal location to look up at the London Eye, situated on the south western corner of the gardens. Alternatively Jubilee Gardens is an ideal to location to wave at friends taking the ride if heights aren’t your ideal way to spend approximately 30 minutes!
