The tree ridden structures lost to the jungles of Cambodia are some of the most amazing structures on earth, therefore there is no wonder many adventure travelers but not only, flock into the wild jungles of the ancient East to explore exotic temples hidden undergrowth, or wrapped in the ancient vines.
Cambodia is a magnificent ancient land full of mysterious jungles and ancient temples. Siem Reap is an amazing city home to French colonial and Chinese-style architecture and a gateway to the Angkor region. The city of Siem Reap is where you will find traditional Aspara dancers, handmade crafts, small fishing villages and a nearby country-side scattered with rice paddy fields. The Old French Quarter and Old Market are a great places to spot some of this amazing architecture of the past. Also many luxury hotels are to be found here, like the amazing Victoria Angkor Resort and Spa, a one of a kind colonial style haven.
But a visit to Cambodia would not be complete without seeing the famous temple of Angkor Wat, the largest and most magnificent Hindu complex in the world. This amazing temple dates back to the 12th Century and was once the capital of the Khmer Empire. Another must see structure is the Bayon Temple, a highly detailed Khmer temple surrounded by the ancient jungle. This serene temple etched with many Buddha faces is one of a kind. At the Bayon Temple, take your experience one step further and explore the temples on the back of an elephant! The Ta Prohm in Angkor Thom built in Bayon style is another great temple surrounded by the jungle making it one of Angkor's most popular.
If you would like to set out on an adventure and explore the Cambodian country-side in all terrain vehicles, you are in luck! Quad Adventure Cambodia offers a new way of discovering the county-side and secluded villages that would take long hours to reach otherwise. Another great way to get out into the jungle and see all this amazing place has to offer is Angkor Touchstone Private Tours. These guided tours include unique experiences flying in a helicopter, kayaking, trekking and mountain biking. Take a chance and go off the beaten path! I recommend jumping in with two feet and adding a float down the Mekong to your list of adventures while in Cambodia. You won't regret this once in a lifetime, two-day experience on a riverboat where you will enjoy a peaceful look into the lush ecosystems and float past small villages or the largest city and capital, Phnom Penh.
Phnom Penh is another great city in Cambodia known for its many beautiful temples and bustling markets. Once named “the Pearl of Asia”, this beautiful city is where the former French-colony took shape. For souvenir shopping head to the Russian Market where near the back you will also find some restaurants and Yej Cafe. I highly recommend this cafe as it serves some of the best food in town! The Central Market is also a great place to walk around and enjoy an abundance of selection from clothes, kitchen items, jewelry and electronics. This particular market is considered a city landmark and is housed inside a fancy 1937 Art-Deco style building.
When visiting Phnom Penh, don't forget to stop by the Royal Palace. Home to the king himself, this beautiful building dominates the waterfront and features the spectacular Silver Pagoda. A combined display of 5,329 silver floor tiles, the Silver Pagoda is home to decorative gold, silver and jeweled Buddha relics.
The jungles of adventure are waiting for you in Cambodia!
