Colmar is a fairy-tale like place. Situated along the Alsatian wine route, the beauty of its well-preserved old town is comparable to none.
But seeing the colorful half-timbered houses from the street level and living in one of them, if only for a few days, is an entirely different matter. And both Cipri and I wanted so badly to spend a few nights in one of the pretty buildings...
We booked a room at the Colombier Suites. Well, it was actually an awesome suite, with a charming living space and an interesting adaptation to the modern standards of luxury.
Colombier Suites is located in the heart of 'Little Venice', in an 18th century building. The elegant suites are just across the street from the Colombier Hotel, both of them sharing a reception and breakfast room.
The emblematic traditional building has gorgeously sculpted wooden beams both on the facade and inside. The inner courtyard is bordered by one of the river branches and luxuriant vegetation. There are comfy benches and armchairs for the guests' enjoyment and the atmosphere is serene and private. Spending relaxing moments here, surrounded by half-timbered houses, away from the bustle of the street is a privilege and a priceless experience.
The house is beautifully maintained and restored in spite of its old age. As we enter our suite, we encounter a glass shower and an open vanity space. Two steps down, we find the living room with a large chaise couch and flat screen TV. It's not a big living space, but it suites its purpose and it has expose beams. We are extremely happy to find a complimentary bottle of sweet Alsatian wine waiting for us on the table. The attention to details is one of the strong points of the people working here.
In the bedroom Cipri is delighted to find another flat TV - he's a bit of a tech nerd, while I'm happy to find a soft bed, extremely comfortable, that is guaranteed to provide a good night's sleep.
The suite is incredibly charming and elegant. We are delighted with it and we find it difficult to leave. But the fact that it's so centrally located, right in the middle of the old town, allows us to come back a few times a day to rest, or even take a nap any time we feel like it.
Breakfast is served in the Colombier Hotel just across the street. There is a nice selection of cold cuts, cheeses, fruits, cereals, pastries, and my absolute favorite, hot chocolate. The atmosphere is relaxed and the staff is very nice and discrete.
Colombier Suites are located among restaurants and cute souvenir shops and it's one of the most charming accommodations one can possible imagine. Before leaving, we are shown a few more rooms, all incredibly pretty and unique, adapted to perfection to the modern standards of living. Some of them even have gorgeous views over the rooftops of Colmar.
We have to admit it was not difficult at all to fall in love with both Colmar and Colombier Suites. A word of warning though - if you have mobility issues, let the staff know when you book your room or suite. Some of the rooms are only accessibly via stairs.
For more information you can check out the hotel's website and Facebook page.
We were guests of Colombier Suites, however, all opinions expressed here are entirely our own and based on our personal experience.
