First Hotel Marin, Bergen. A Charming Hotel in A Fairytale Like City

When we visited Bergen this summer, we stayed at Firsts Hotel Marin, part of the First Hotels network spreading all over Scandinavia. The hotel stands out for being located next to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Bryggen, right in the city center. The facade is made of gorgeous red bricks, while following the lines of the classical Nordic architectural style, making for a very charming hotel in a fairy-tale like city.

Our Room

We stayed in the rooftop suite, a huge L-shaped space with beautiful exposed wooden beams and a maritime theme. We particularly liked the brick wall details and the minimalist style of the decor that made the suite look even more spacious. When we arrived, the sun was curiously picking inside though the small windows. I particularly enjoy this moment when a few rays manage to make their way inside buildings, and for me, this is the most magical time of the day. So it's easy to imagine I was instantly smitten when we entered our suite. But at First Hotel Marin, the perfect timing is just part of the recipe.

The views over the bay and the hills we could enjoy from up here were absolutely amazing. And when we opened the windows and the street noise made its way to us, it felt like we were secretly picking into the life of the people living here. The mixture of human voices and seagull screams was incredible and we could have laid there on top of the bed, caressed by the pleasantly warm Scandinavian sun, listening to them for hours. It was like we had Bergen kneeled at our feet - the famous fish market was just there, shyly hiding behind a building, the point from where the fjord cruises depart was across the street and the funicular station for going up Mt Floyen was around the corner. There was an iron and tea facilities in the room too.

The Common Areas

At the ground level the hotel has a wonderful array of common areas, and passing from one to the other is like changing worlds. There are comfy sofas and old books, and space, lots of space in between. First Hotel Marin has a very airy decor that is amplified even further by strategically placed mirrors. It is curious how they so graciously managed to combine modern elements with classic ones and end up with a relaxing atmosphere.

The Breakfast

Served in yet another beautiful brick walled room, the buffet breakfast was very delicious. From all kinds of breads and crackers we got used to and expected from any hotel in Scandinavia by now, to Nordic delicacies and fruits, everything was just perfect. As we had a train to catch, we were between the first guests to arrive at breakfast and therefore we enjoyed a very relaxing and quiet atmosphere.
