When I travel, I like emerging myself in the local culture. But I also like the comforts of the modern world just as much as the next guy. And I simply can't imagine traveling around without having my music with me.
Having my favorite songs on my mobile, tablet or laptop is handy and acceptable while on train or plane, as I use my headphones. But once arrived at the hotel, the small speakers of the mentioned devices are always unsatisfactory, providing poor sound quality for a romantic evening in the hotel room. Exactly for this type of situations, I have got my hands on a Jabra Solemate, the latest portable Bluetooth speaker. It is only 17,2x6,4x7cm and it weights just a bit over 600g, so it's compact enough to be packed in any traveling bag or suitcase.
Jabra Solemate has three front-facing speakers, a sub-woofer and dual tweeters, delivering 120 decibels of excellent sound. The music coming from the small speakers on my laptop simply cannot be compared to the great quality sound from the Solemate, with surprising levels of bass for such a small device, having no problem to fill a hotel room.
I prefer to use the the Jaba Solemate with my smartphone, through the Bluetooth 3.0 wireless connection, as the device also doubles as a speakerphone. In the back of the speaker there is a hidden cable that can be used with non-Bluetooth devices, like my old mp3 player, that being so small always ends up in my travel bag, as a back up.
What else is there in the box? Along with the Solmate speaker there is also an AC charger, USB charging cable, and a 3.5mm audio cable. But what I mostly like is the splash resistant "Sound Bag", perfect for carrying the speaker and keeping it dirt free on any trip, on the beach or in the woods. The cool thing about the bag is that it doesn't obstruct the sound, but amplifies it really well, so you can keep the speaker protected in the bag while listening to great music in the great outdoors.
In my trips I leave the AC charger at home, as I use the USB charging cable with my mobile charger. One charger is enough as I don't need to charge mobile and speakers at the same time. The Solemate has a battery life of 8-10 hours, at the end of which a voice declares it's time to recharge. Really cute! The same voice greets you every time you connect Solemate and for me this is the difference between a tool and a travel companion.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a portable speaker for your next trip, or to take on the beach, I can really recommend you the Jabra Solemate, as it does the job perfectly. It can easily fill a hotel room with great sounding music for a small party or a romantic evening.
"Early" wasn't the word for when I went to sleep last night. I was in bed and probably out like a light by 7:30 pm! I slept in until 8 or so this morning, so I should be well rested. I briefly thought of going to Costco early but that...
