Las Fallas Festival, Valencia: Fallas & Ninots
Las Fallas or the Festival of Fire is held in Valencia, Spain every year from the 1st to the 19th of March. People hit the streets dressed up in traditional costumes, build a huge statue of Virgin Mary out of flowers and enormous fallas (cardbord and papier-mâché figures), enjoy mascletas, light displays and valencian food. I am in Valencia right now and I will keep you updated throughout 2011's Las Fallas Festival.
Each neighbourhood of the city of Valencia has an organized group of people, the Casal faller, that works all year long holding fundraising parties and dinners, usually featuring paella, the famous local speciality. Each casal faller produces a colorful and satirical cardboard and papier-mâché construction known as a falla and a smaller one known as falla infantil (children's falla) which are eventually burnt on the 19th of March, the night of San Jose.

Below you can see some of this year's fallas and some
ninots (Valencian for
puppets or
dolls) that compose the bigger fallas. The fallas infantiles are usually no more than 2,5 - 3 meters high, but the big fallas, especially the ones that enter the special category (that's over 10,001euro budget) can be as tall as a four or five stories building. Almost all of Valencia's city squares have a falla built ion the middle, adding up to about 700 fallas around the city every year.
The most expensive falla ever build was in 2009, it had a 900,000euro budget and it was burnerd along with all the others. Only one ninot is saved from the fire every year and it is on display at the Museo Faller from Valencia, close to The City Of Arts And Sciences.
