It's no secret that both my husband and I are crazy about sweets. And macarons are top of the list. So while in Paris, a visit to Pierre Hermé was inevitable.
We plan our day around the macarons. First, we find a Pierre Hermé Pâtisserie nearby Hotel Bourgogne and Montana. Then we go enjoy them on Champs de Mars with views at the Eiffel Tower.
The patisserie in Rue Bonaparte, 72 is stylish, with a dark decor. The place is pretty small, but even at mid-morning it is packed with people facing tough choices. On one side, there are shelves stuffed with cookies and bonbons in shiny cellophane bags. On the other, an incredible rainbow of colors and flavors awaits.
Pierre Hermé's flavors are incredibly creative, and we just feel like having them all.
However, we end up with a box of 7 macarons from the new Les Jardins Collection and a Rose Petals & Raspberries pastry for each.
As we walk for half an hour till the Eiffel Tower, we are a bit worried the mild August heat might melt the pastries in our bag or that they might crack. But they all perform admirably, and as we sit down on the lawn on Champs de Mars, the shells are still intact and the filling in place.
I sink my teeth in the first macaron, and the thin, crispy crust cracks with a little sound. As I devour the rest of the box, the first bites become music to my years. The macarons are soft, and light, and float on our tongues like little sugary clouds. They are amazing!
I love that each is so uniquely flavored. The cream is abundant and the combination of fragrances is perfect.
My absolute favorite macarons are the Velouté Ispahan (Yoghurt & Rose, Litchi, Raspberry) and Infiniment Café Iapar Rouge du Brasil (Red Iapar Coffee from Brazil).
On a very close second place come the Infiniment Caramel (Salted-Butter Caramel), Infiniment Rose (Rose & Rose Petal) and Velouté Citron Vert (Yogurt & Lime zest).
And finally the Infiniment Chocolat Porcelana (Pure Origin Venezuela Porcelana Dark Chocolate) and Mogador (Milk Chocolate & Passion Fruit), maybe because I have a very peculiar taste when it comes to chocolate.
Nevertheless,
the Rose Petals & Raspberries pastry is divine. The raspberries used are top quality, fully ripe and sweet and they look like they are clones, that's how well chosen they are. The fragrances blend in perfect harmony and the cream, is out of this world. The pastry is like a bigger version of a macaron, but because it can be enjoyed in more than just two bites, it gives longer lasting pleasure.
After tasting Pierre Hermé's pastries, all I can say is that I feel relieved I don't live in Paris or I would have a serious weight problem on my hands.
