Munich Oktoberfest 2010. The 200 Years Jubilee And Some Apps

When fall leaves light Germany's forests ablaze, and there's a tang of amber ale and fall in the air, it can only mean one thing... Oktoberfest.

It's been two hundred years since the wedding of Bavaria's King Ludwig I, event that inaugurated the popular festival. This year, the world's largest fair, with over 6 million visitors every year, celebrates its 200th birthday and the city of Munich made some special arrangements. However, this is only the 177th Oktoberfest as over the past two centuries, 24 Oktoberfests have not taken place due to war and epidemics.

This year's Oktoberfest starts on the 17th of September, one day earlier than usual, with a family-friendly historical beer tent with traditional decoration and a special beer, brewed only for the historical Oktoberfest by the Munich breweries. The official opening ceremony will take place though on Saturday, September 18th, at noon, in the Schottenhamel tent (free entry) when the mayor of Munich will tap the first keg of Oktoberfest beer. The festival will last until October 4th, one day later than usual. That's two extra days added to the normal Oktoberfest length, which makes this year's Oktoberfest the biggest ever.

People came from all over the world to the Oktoberfest to drink huge beers in heavy steins, eat sausages and brezels, link arms with the locals and join together in song, swing to the Oompha of Bavarian bands and admire traditional German costumes.

As in the previous years, this year's Oktoberfest is located in the Theresienwiese area, in the very centre of Munich. The change comes with the Oktoberfest iPhone apps:

The Oktoberfest free app helps you get to the buckets of beer by telling you which tents are still open. Even cooler than that, this app has a beer counter that counts the beers you have already drunken and shows it to your friends on Facebook!

The Wiesn flirt & find iPhone app allows you to find your friends in the crowd when the levels of noise are so high that you can't hear each other on the phone. The flirt profile helps you find like-minded singles. Just make sure you are a single too, or you might get into trouble.

The Munich Guide free iPhone app is subdivided in three sections: Sights, Restaurants, Bars & Clubs. The recommended location are displayed on a map, so you will find your way around quickly – even after some litres of beer on the Oktoberfest.

In 2011, Oktoberfest is scheduled from September 17 to October 3 and in 2012 from September 22 to October 7. As you might have noticed, Oktoberfest takes place rather in September than in October. See what happens to accuracy in the presence of buckets of beer?
