Amsterdam’s Off-Centre Festival is Just Right for Music Fans
If your musical preferences are a little more underground and you’d rather listen to trance than anything in the Top 40, you might find that there are many music festivals in Amsterdam to suit your tastes. One of these is the Off-Centre Festival, which takes place each year in late September and offers electronic music lovers the chance to listen to some of the hottest DJs in the genre, in one of Amsterdam’s most historic music venues, the Melkweg.
The Off-Centre Festival only made its debut in 2010, but has rapidly become established as a highlight in the annual festival calendar. The 2012 edition, taking place between the 27th and 29th September, features a number of the coolest electronic music DJs over the course of three nights, with the likes of Kakkmaddafakka, Joy Orbison, Gold Panda, Jan van Kampen and Pangaea all taking to the stage in the Melkweg to whip the crowds into a frenzy.
It’s also worth experiencing the Off-Centre Festival to appreciate the coolness of the Melkweg venue, a former warehouse which opened its doors as a music space in the 1970’s and to this day is still run by a not-for-profit organisation. Over the years thousands of punk, rock, dance and folk acts have appeared at the venue, which perfectly epitomises the ultra-hip, inclusive attitude to music in Amsterdam, and a peek inside should not be missed.
See the Sights
As the Off-Centre Festival DJs don’t start spinning their tunes until the night-time, you’ll have plenty of time throughout the day to take in all of the sights Amsterdam has to offer.
That means that you could enjoy breakfast by one of the canals in the morning before spending the afternoon on a boat trip, to see the best of Amsterdam in a totally unique way. You could also rent a bike to zoom through the streets with the locals, but don’t forget to tick off sights such as the Red Light District, the Oude Kerk, the Vondelpark and of course, stop to do some shopping!
