Wooden walkways at Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia |
Plitvice Lakes National Park is a watery wonderland, one of the most popular Croatian tourist destinations and one of Europe’s best back-to-nature experiences. Part of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage list, Plitvice Park lays over 50 acres and is composed out of 16 turquoise crystalline terraced lakes interconnected by waterfalls and surrounded by dense virgin forests of beech, fir and spruce. The park includes the spring of the Korana River and it is home to more than 160 bird species and a variety of wildlife - deer, wolves, wildcats, wild boar, etc.

Beautiful waterfalls at Plitvice Lakes National Park, Croatia |
Plitvice’s lakes are divided into the Upper Lakes and the Lower Lakes. The park officially has two entrances, each with ticket windows and snack and gift shops. Within the park there are picnic tables, restaurants and kiosks selling wheels of cheese and different kinds of strudel.
A well-laid out system of wooden walkways and hiking trails allow the visitor to explore the park freely and comfortable shoes and clothes are advisable. A park bus and a silent, pollution-free electric boat service are available too. There's no wrong season to visit Plitvice Lakes. In winter the frozen falls are magnificent; in summer the lush greenery is relaxing; in autumn the fall leaves light forests ablaze. Plitvice is just a two-hour drive from Zagreb and it is a must see for anybody visiting Croatia.
